Extended Warranty vs Manufacturer Warranty: What's the Difference?
Not all warranties are warranties. Here's the honest breakdown.
Manufacturer warranty (the one that comes with the car)
This is the factory-backed coverage included in the purchase price of a new vehicle. It usually splits into bumper-to-bumper (3 years / 36,000 miles is typical), powertrain (5 years / 60,000 miles or more), and specific coverages like corrosion or emissions. The manufacturer stands behind it directly.
Manufacturer-backed extended service plan (Ford Protect, Honda Care, GMPP)
Sold by the manufacturer or its captive finance arm, honored at any franchise dealer. This is generally the most reliable extended coverage because the same company that built the car pays the claims.
Third-party vehicle service contract (CarShield, Endurance, CARCHEX)
Sold and administered by independent companies. Coverage varies dramatically by plan tier and administrator. Read the exclusions and the wear-item list very carefully. These contracts are often the target of consumer complaints.
Prepaid maintenance plan (PMP)
A separate product from any warranty. Covers scheduled maintenance (oil changes, filters, spark plugs, fluid services) on a schedule. Very valuable if your dealer honors it correctly. Frequently forgotten by owners, so items already paid for get quoted again at retail.
